In the courtyard of the Museum stand an artifact and a monument. The artifact is a carriage compartment* from the first train that made the historic climb up Penang Hill on the funicular cable-rail. The hill service was launched in January 1924.

The monument is in the memory of the founder of Penang, Captain Francis Light. Standing proud and imposing in front of the grounds, it is cast in bronze and sculptured after the likeness of his son, William. Commissioned in 1936 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the settlement, it was completed in 1939.

* Currently the carriage compartment serves as a stall selling publications, postcards and souvenirs. It is operated by The Penang Heritage Trust, and all proceeds collected will go towards their fund.
