2-Million Ringgit Temple Opens

Some 200,000 devotees attended the consecration ceremony of the Ayira Vaisyar Sri Meenakshi Sundraeswarar Temple in Jalan Kebun Bunga on 9 February 1998. A one-of-a-kind in South-East Asia, the temple is modelled after the 500-year-old Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, India.

Construction of the temple took 3 years to complete, with the help of 15 sculptors from India.

An overall view of the temple

The temple will house 48 deities from Kanchipuram, India, together with the main deities - Meenakshi Sundraeswarar and Thirupathi. Unique to the temple is the Meenakshi Amman and nine Navakaragam deities which are made of green stone and a Lingam which formed itself in the Himalayas.
